چکیده

SUMMARY Theoretical analyses are made of the influence of the following features on the longitudinal shear and transverse tensile moduli of unidirectional fibre reinforced composites: (i) random variations in positioning of individual fibres, (ii) overall variations leading to fibre bunching, (iii) overall variations leading to interspersed matrix layers, (iv) localised variations resulting in matrix pockets. The degree to which these features occur in CFRP is considered, and observed discrepancies between measured values of the moduli and theoretical predictions assuming a regular hexagonal array are explained.

C.P. No. 1297, PROCUREMENT EXECUTIVE, MINISTRY OF DEFENCE

SUMMARY The variability of fatigue damage from flight to flight is examined for a fleet of aircraft, both within aircraft and between aircraft. A method is described of modifying the standard analysis of variance technique to take account of correlation between consecutive flights and an example is given. It is then shown how to use the estimates of variance so obtained in the derivation of fac...

C.P. No. 1326 PROCUREMENT EXECUTIVE, MINISTRY OF DEFENCE

SUMMARY Chordwise pressure distributions were measured at several spanwise stations on a two-dimensional model wing fitted with a plain-hinged, trailing-edge flap, at a Reynolds number of 1.9 x IO6 based on chord. The flap was divided into two parts and was deflected to a maximum of 5'. When the flaps were deflected differentially, the transition from a pressure distribution characteristic of t...

SUMMARY Temperature measurements, using the SLR method, are presented for the expansion of nitrogen in nozzles attached to a shock-tube. The measurements were made at an area ratio of 8.5 in a two-dimensional nozzle and at an area ratio of 152 in a conical nozzle. Initial conditions were such that at the entrance to the nozzles the temperature ranged between about 2500 K and 5300 K and the pres...
